Misery Business
Elliot Slater walked down the empty hall of Mercy Hospital’s Psych ward, the echo of her DK heels louder than the moans of patients behind closed doors. She ran her fingers through her strawberry blond curls and tried to look as professional as she could in her navy Armani skirt and blazer set; Ellie stopped at Room 215 and glanced around for any hospital personnel before she slid the plastic key card she’d stolen from one of the nurses into the magnetic strip reader. She let out her breath when the little light turned green and she pushed open the door; she stuck her head into the dark room first, the light in the hall casting a thin triangular ray across the floor but she couldn’t see beyond it, “Violet?” she called softly.
A low noise answered her call and Ellie glanced around again before stepping into the room and leaving the door a little opened behind her, there still wasn’t enough light to find her friend in the dark, she pursed her lips and took the penlight from her blazer pocket, she pressed the little notch and a thin slit of light split the remaining darkness, she moved it over the walls, the sink, and finally the bed. Violet Ann Thomas was strapped to her bed, her violet eyes stared up at Ellie, and there were dark bruises under them from sleepless, nightmare filled nights and her plump pink lips were cracked and bleeding, she looked so thin in her hospital sweats, so pale and fragile; she smiled slightly, “Hi Ellie.” Violet said her voice cracking.
Ellie smiled softly, “Hey babe, I’m gonna get you the hell outta dodge, okay?” she drawled in her soft Georgia accent. She watched Violet nod as she bent over her and, holding the penlight between her teeth, undid her wrist and ankle straps. She helped her friend to her feet and took her hand gingerly, careful not to apply any pressure to the bruises covering her wrists; she clicked off the penlight and put it back in her pocket as she led Violet out into the hall, she glanced around before starting back the way she’d come. They’d almost reached the door when one of overnight nurses spotted them on her way back from a caffeine fix, “Hey, where are you taking that patient?” the nurse called, starting for them.
“Ah shit, we’ve been caught.” Ellie muttered, she gave Violet’s hand a tug and broke into a run towards the emergency stairs, she could hear the nurse calling after them and she moved faster, praying to God and Donna Karan she didn’t fall flat on her face. She felt a rush of relief when they flew through the emergency door and started down the stairs, she squeezed Violet’s hand, she heard the door slam open behind them a male voices call for them to stop. Violet made a little noise, “Don’t be alarmed, Elliot, but they’re guards right on our asses.” She breathed a hint of Louisiana in her tone.
Ellie glanced back to see three of them rushing after them, she looked forward again as her heel snapped and she pitched forward, nothing concrete stairs in front of them; a scream started to build up in her chest when the world dropped out around them and they were suddenly in the parking lot. She caught her balance, her scream becoming a fierce blush as she glanced back at Violet, there was blood dripping from her nose and a crooked grin curved her lips, “That felt good, you okay?” she mumbled, wiping at the blood on her face.
Elliot felt a nervous laugh bubble up from her lips, “I’m good, let’s go.” She said, glancing at the hospital before dragging her towards her black Audi A8, she reached into her blazer for her keys and clicked open the car, the young women hurried inside; Ellie brought the engine to life and drove like a bat out of hell. She didn’t slow down until they driving towards the city limits, “I got you a change clothes in the back, you hungry?” she asked, glancing at Violet.
Violet glanced at the backseat and grabbed the folded jeans and tank top she’d left for her, “I could go for a cheese burger.” She mumbled.
Ellie nodded slightly, “There’s a McDonalds up ahead.” She mumbled, pursing her lips, her curious nature begging to ask questions about the psych ward but she kept them to herself. They were silent as Violet changed and started to dig through Ellie’s middle console and found a hair clip, she put up her blond hair and sighed, “Thank you for busting me out.” She said softly, “It was awful just sittin’ in that room listening to the souls around you war inside your head and not just human souls but angels and demons, heaven and hell.” Violet murmured, glancing at her best friend, “I heard Lynnie died.”
Ellie looked sad for a moment before she nodded slightly, “We won’t let her stay dead for long; Eliya wants to find a way to save her, even after what Lynn did.” She shook her head, “Betraying a friend to have an affair with her husband, it’s not Lynn’s style, even if the guy is a handsome Devil.” She mumbled.
Violet made a noise of agreement as Ellie pulled into the McDonalds parking lot, she cut the engine and they slid out of the car, they headed inside the near empty place. Ellie moved towards the counter, she smiled politely at the young lady standing behind the register, she was sweet-faced despite her pink, spiky hair and face jewelry, she reminded the women of a time years ago, “What can I get you gals?” the girl said, putting on a fairly genuine smile.
Ellie smiled, “I’ll take a mushroom and Swiss with a Cherry Coke.” She said softly and glanced at Violet, who smiled, “I would like two double cheeseburgers, a big fry, large sweet tea, and an apple pie.” She said, nodding.
The girl raised a brow at Violet but didn’t comment as she keyed in their order, Ellie paid for them as Violet moved towards a table to wait, a stone-like exhaustion setting in her bones as her tummy growled for food, a much darker hunger twisting beneath. She shut her eyes before glancing at the girl behind the counter again, she knew her violet eyes were darkening as she felt a hum start beneath her skin and she felt the girl’s soul press against her, she felt a sudden chill wrap around her spine, she shut her eyes again, preparing for the assault of malignant images from the girl’s past. She could taste the sin on her tongue and she knew her eyes would be black when she opened them to study the girl again; Ellie started for their table and set the tray of food down, Violet snatched a fry and stuffed it in her mouth as she got to her feet, “I’ll be right back.” She breathed, she started for the restroom, catching the girl’s eye, she pressed her will into her soul and she knew the girl would follow as she slipped inside.
Violet leaned against the wall, watching the door when the girl from behind the counter slipped inside, she looked up at Violet with pretty blue eyes, she opened her mouth to speak with Violet moved forward and pressed her mouth against the girl’s, she pinned her up against the door with her body as she kissed her deeply, “I know what you did to that poor girl, Lacey.” She breathed against her, her fingers moving to cup the girl’s face in her hands, “How you let your boyfriend rape your little sister so he’d stay with you.” she breathed, kissing her again, power hummed in her chest as she opened her mouth over the girl’s and began to suck out her soul.
When the darker hunger stopped twisting her guts, Violet let go of her, she let the girl slide to the floor, a soulless, lifeless shell. She made a noise as she moved the girl away from the door and stepped out. Ellie glanced up at her friend from a bite of Swiss and mushroom, she raised a brow, noticing the flush of her cheeks and vibrancy in her violet eyes, she shook her head not going to ask as Violet sat down and dug into her first cheeseburger, “So where are we going?” Violet mumbled before taking a long sip of sweet tea.
Ellie swallowed the delicious bite of food and thought a moment, “I think its time we visit our dear friend Eliya; I hear Nashville’s great this time of year.” She said and smiled.
